IUPAC Atomic Weights of the Elements List

This is the 2013 list of atomic weights of the elements in increasing atomic number, as accepted by the IUPAC. The table is based on the Standard Atomic Weights Revised v2 (Sept 24,2013). The list includes the 2013  changes to the atomic weights of 19 elements: arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, cesium, cobalt, fluorine, gold, holmium, manganese, molybdenum, niobium, phosphorus, praseodymium, scandium,  selenium, thorium, thulium and yttrium. These values remain current until the IUPAC sees the need to revise them. Values given by the [a;b] notation highlights the range of atomic weights for the element. For these elements, the atomic weight is dependent on the physical and chemical history of the element. The interval reflects the minimum (a) and the maximum (b) values for the element.Values given in chevron brackets (e.g., Fm 257) are the mass numbers of the longest-lived isotope of elements that do not have stable nuclides. However, atomic weights are provided for Th, Pa, and U because these elements have a characteristic abundance in the earths crust. For detailed element facts, consult the  Periodic Table  for individual elements. Essays on Timothy and Thomas Company's Deontological, Ethical Approach Case Study The paper â€Å"Timothy and Thomas Company’s Deontological, Ethical Approach" is a   thrilling example of a case study on ethics. Timothy and Thomas (TT) Company is currently facing a serious ethical dilemma. One of the company’s ethical guidelines concerns child labor. The company does not allow its contractors in any part of the world to employ children less than fourteen years of age (Nichols 12). However, it seems that the company contractors of the Lahore plant in Pakistan do not adhere to the guideline. The ethical dilemma is created by the fact that these underage girls that work with Pakistan contractors do much work and are paid very little. This makes both the contractors and hence the company realizes much profit (Nichols 13).The stakeholders involved with the ethical issue include; the company’s vice president, the Pakistan contractors, and the underage girls working in the Pakistan plants. As Yusuf Ahmed the TT sourcing manger in Pakistan explains to Stein, the company’s vice president, the young girls are benefiting from the ethical dilemma. This is because the contractors are giving them a roof, food, and some earnings rather than loitering in the streets to get something to feed on. The use of young girls as cheap labor will eventually make the company lose its reputation when it leaks out, especially in developed countries such as the USA. To the contractors, the young girls are assets to them as they enable them to make much profit as they pay them minimal wages (Nichols 14).TT Company is using a deontological, ethical approach. The rule is to ensure that none of the company’s employees is below the age of fourteen. Therefore, using children below this age is immoral. Despite the fact that the children in Pakistan plants are offering labor to get essential necessities such as food and clothing, the company’s vice president still feels uneasy seeing them work in these firms. However, it seems to Yusu f the souring manager in Pakistan has adopted a different approach concerning this ethical issue. He argues that the company has given the young girls an excellent opportunity, as there is no option left for them. Therefore, his approach can be said to be consequential. This is because he judges the act of the Pakistan contractors’ morals based on the circumstances that are facing these poor, young girls and the benefits they are getting because of providing labor in the Pakistan plants.There are two possible solutions to this ethical problem. However, every solution has its consequences. The company could have opted to force the Pakistan contractors to fire all the children working in their plants. As a result, the contractors would demand more money to cater for increased wages for adults and skilled labor (Nichols 13). The other solution is allowing the contractors to continue keeping these children and document their ages as fourteen and above. The ramification of this op tion would be a violation of the company’s ethical guidelines, which are in line with the US ethical guidelines where most of the company’s customers are.In my opinion, Stein should advise the TT owners to provide on-site childcare and education for the very young employees. The company should also offer vocational training to the adult workers to equip them with up-to-date skills and knowledge required in the industry. In this way, the company will be assured of a skilled labor force in the future. If adult women become skilled, their wages will improve and hence their living standards. In the long run, these families will have enough for sustenance and for providing education to their children instead of carrying them to the plants.

New Religions Essay Example For Students

New Religions Essay Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, and Christianity are religions that have been around for thousands of years. At some point in time all four of these religions were new, and I am sure viewed with some skepticism of this ideology being taught. Within all of these religions there have been people who have disagreed with the beliefs being practiced and this has caused many to leave to form their own religious groups. The road to finding ones faith is not always easy and that is why religions are constantly being recreated to fit ones perception of God. The new religious movement for this paper will be defined as religions less then two hundred years old. They were formed due to separation from an established church or by an individual having a vision from God. There are two in particular that I will cover Branch Davidians and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I will not be focusing on the religion from where it came but rather on the history of the person, beliefs and the pra ctices of these new religious movements. The Branch Davidians were once known as The Shepherds Rod, a Seventh-Day Adventist Branch. Victor Houteff first heard the teachings of the Seventh- Day Adventist Church in 1918 at a revival meeting. Houteff eventually came to believe that the Seventh-day Adventist doctrines and teachings were inaccurate and he called for reform. The church isolated Houteff and his followers that resulted in a brake from SDA and the foundation of The Shepherds Rod. Houteff saw himself as a divine messenger sent by God to reveal the secret information in the scroll mentioned in the Book of Revelation, Chapter 5. Houteff compiled his beliefs in his book The Shepherds Rod. He began the process of attaining followers by founding the Mount Carmel Center near Waco, Texas with eleven of his followers in 1935. This event prompted Houteff to change the name of his group to the Davidian Seventh-Day Adventist Association. In 1955, Victor Houteff died. With his mission in complete and his prophetic claims unfulfilled, unease swept throughout the group. Houteffs wife, Florence, assumed leadership of the movement despite splintering within the group. One such splintered group, the Branch Davidians, led by Benjamin Roden, would later take control of the Davidian movement. Before this occurred, however, Florence Houteff predicted that the time of Gods judgement would fall on April 22, 1959. She believed this would be when the 1,260 days of Revelation 11 would be completed and on that day God would intervene in Palestine. Followers began to assemble at the New Mount Carmel, located east of Waco, and on April 16, 1959 prepared to move to the Holy Land. (Dallas Morning News)Roden named his faction the Branch Davidian SDA. Roden declared himself the fifth angel (Revelation 9:1), in the same vein as Houteff, who had declared himself the fourth angel (Revelation 8:12). He lead the Branch until his death in 1978, whereupon his wife, Lois Roden, assumed the role of the sixth angel (Revelation 9:16). Vernon Howell joined the group in 1981 and Lois expressed her belief that he would be the groups next prophet. However, George Roden, Loiss son, forced Howell and his followers out of Mount Carmel in 1984. In 1990, Vernon Howell changed his name to David Koresh. He chose his name from Isaiah 45, which states that Cyrus was the only non-Israelite who was given the title anointed or a messiah or in Greek, a Christ. The Branch Davidians embrace the core teachings of the Seventh-Day Adventists. The SDA Church follows most of the conservative Christian beliefs: creation, original sin, the virgin birth, the fall of mankind in the Garden of Eden, the divinity of Christ, the Trinity, belief in Satan as evil, the infallibility of Scripture, salvation by the atonement of Christ, etc. However, three major doctrinal differences exist, and they also deny the concept of innate mortality. They believe that when someone dies they remain unconscious until they are either resurrected into eternal life with God, which is only given to righteous Christians, or annihilated. A second resurrection will occur and the righteous will return to a newly cleansed earth and establish the New Jerusalem. Houteff interpreted current events as signs of the end of time. Under Roden, the Branch Davidians created a logo to represent their beliefs. In his writings, Roden focused on anti-Catholicism, recovery of Israelite festivals, and general conference reform. David Koresh ultimately became the leader of the Branch Davidians and ushered in a new era for this sect with his New Light doctrine and elevated prophetic status. Koresh furthered the work of his forefathers by continuing with the Adventist tradition, adopting a messianic role essential to human salvation, and ordaining the end time. With his focus on the Book of Revelation, Koresh desired to create a new lineage of Gods children from his seed, making him the perfect mate for all female adherents. K oresh established what he called the House of David and in 1984 began taking spiritual wives. Differing from past eras, he progressively linked his groups activities to an imminent future and not too past traditions. A key distinction within Koreshs era was his gradual revelation of the secrets of the seven seals in Bible study sessions, which convinced the group that they were living in the end time. In 1992, he renamed the Mount Carmel community Ranch Apocalypse. Under Koreshs leadership, the group adopted a much more communal form of organization and recruited heavily from the young adult population. The Mighty Men were Koreshs lieutenants who held various responsibilities with in the community. Gradually, tension with the larger society increased as the Davidians moved toward prophetic movement organization. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is one such religion. In 1816, Joseph Smith and his family moved to Palmyra, New York, where, in 1820, a religious revival occurred. Joseph, a young 14-year-old boy, was very intrigued by the numerous preachers and what they had to say. However, he was also confused because each church claimed to be the true one. He decided to turn to the Bible for assistance. There he found the scripture: If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. (James 1:5) In 1823, Smith had another vision, this time of an angel named Moroni. The angel directed Smith to a hill near Palmyra; buried under this hill was a religious history of an ancient American civilization inscribed on golden plates. In 1830, Smith established the Church of Christ in Fayette, New York; however, later revelation commanded th at the name be changed to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The key belief of the LDS church is that it is a restoration to the Earth of the original Christian church, which was abandoned through the apostasy during the early centuries of the Christian era. Several key beliefs are contained in these statements, including a belief in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost. LDS members have confirmed the purpose of life within the framework of three questions: It is the firm belief of the members of the Church that they are the spiritual offspring of God the Eternal Father and that all people lived as spirit beings with God in a premortal life. In this life, people were taught all of Gods plans and purposes; also, it was here where God revealed his Plan of Salvation to them. Life on Earth serves several purposes, the main one being that it is a test to determine if people are worthy to return to live with God. After completion of li fe on Earth, Mormons believe that the spiritual body separates from the physical one and enters the Spirit World. It is here where the person is judged and it is determined if he or she is worthy to live with God the Eternal Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, for all eternity. LDS members do not believe that if one is judged worthy, he or she is automatically placed into the familiar notion of Heaven. This notion comes from Pauls reference to three heavens in II Cor. 12:1-4; however, whereas most Christian denominations believe these three heavens to be the sky, outer space, and Gods kingdom, LDS members believe them to be three degrees of glory. The Terrestial Kingdom is saved for those who lived honorable lives on Earth but were blinded by the craftiness of men and were not valiant in the testimony of Jesus. The highest degree of glory, and the one LDS members strive to reach, is the Celestial Kingdom. Entrance into this Kingdom requires a temple marriage and sealing (see below); p eople are able to dwell in the presence of both God the Father and Jesus Christ for all eternity. Members are typically baptized at the age of eight, although the age obviously differs for those who convert later in their life. At sixteen years of age, young men receive the Melchizedek Priesthood, where duties include blessing the sacrament and baptizing worthy people. Another unique belief held by LDS members is that of baptism for the dead. Along with these beliefs, LDS members adhere to a strict set of moral codes. Young men and women are strongly encouraged to be honest and chaste; all members must abstain from premarital sex, pornography, foul language and gambling. The church has no paid clergy; rather, people are called to various positions and must fulfill their duties in their spare time. Perhaps the most important and central focus of the LDS church is the family. Marriages performed in the Churchs temples do not end at death; rather, both the marriage and family relations hips are sealed for time and all eternity. This idea of an eternal family governs their way of life; every effort is made to live a life worthy of returning to live with God the Father (and thus their family in the Celestial Kingdom). The Branch Davidians, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints both have separate ideologies but they are the same in the aspect that their religious perspectives are less then two hundred years old. There are websites, movies, and books about Koresh and each hold a slightly different perspective about The Branch Davidians. I feel is due to the fact that each author has slightly bias opinion according to his or her religious beliefs. This in turn makes Koresh to be either a martyr or a deranged maniac. Bibliography:

Pestle Analysis Of The Car Industry This report is a PESTLE analysis of the Car Industry. We have looked at Political, Environmental, Social, Technological, Legal and Environmental issues that affect the car industry based on innovations that have and are taking place. It is political factors which are creating market pulls on innovation in the automobile industry and having the greatest affect on the innovations which are produced. This is because the governments of many countries are concerned about global warming and lowering their emissions. And one way to lower its affects is for the automobile industry to create innovations which have less of an impact on the environment. The main ways through which governments are intervening are, Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles, FreedomCAR, emission standards and the Kyoto Protocol. Â  The number of accidents and alcohol related accidents, which are social factors, are starting to increase. This has caused the automotive to innovate to help reverse this increase and lower the number of accidents on the road. 2. INTRODUCTION The aim of this report is to have an insight of the automobile industry, how it has been affected by innovation and what actions the car companies have taken in terms of innovation. We will analyse the external factors of the industry through a PESTLE analysis. The word PESTLE is an abbreviation of Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal and Environmental. A PESTLE analysis is an audit of an organisations environmental influences (CIPD, 2009) that are having an effect on the organisation/industry. The analysis can lead to seeing possible opportunities that lie within the industry and where the major influences on the industry come from. An innovation is the generation of a new idea and its implementation into a product, process or service (Urabe et al, 1986, p.3). An innovation can fall under one of the following categories: Product Changes in the things (products/services) which an organisation offers. Process Changes in the ways they are created and delivered. Position Changes in the context the product/services are introduced Paradigm Changes in the underlying mental models which frame what the organisation does. (Tidd, Bessant and Pavitt, 2005, p.10) We will refer to this classification of different types of innovations throughout this report. The Henderson and Clark model of innovation will also be used, and according to it there are 4 types of innovation: Incremental innovation is the enhancement of existing products or services. (Gaynor, 2002, p. 25) Modular innovation is when new knowledge is required on a product as one part of a product is significantly improved but the overall the architecture of the product remains the same. (Innovation Zen, 2006) Architectural innovation reconfigures a system of components that constitute a product, process or service (Gaynor, 2002, p.26). Radical innovation is the introduction of new products or services that develop into major new businesses or spawn new industries, or that cause significant change in a whole industry (Gaynor, 2002, p.27). 3. THE PARTNERSHIP FOR A NEW GENERATION OF VEHICLES The Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles (PNGV) was a program that started in 1993 by U.S president Bill Clinton and vice president Al Gore (PNGV, 2009). The partnership was between many government agencies including the United States Council for Automotive Research. (USCAR) This consisted of the big three American automotive manufacturers (Ford, General Motors and Chrysler), over 300 suppliers of automotive parts, small businesses, Universities and federal Labs (see appendix 1) (Turner et al, 2000). In this partnership the U.S government would match the amount of capital the big 3 manufacturers invested into the research of technologies that would help achieve the partnerships objectives and the big 3 manufacturers, small businesses, universities and laboratories would carry out the research (Jewett, 1997). When this program first started, it had 3 objectives: To increase the competitiveness of the U.S automotive industry. Create a mid -sized vehicle that has the fuel efficiency of 80 miles to the gallon whilst keeping the performance and cost similar to those of vehicles that were available in 1993. This vehicle would need to apply to the emissions standards of 2004. Employ the innovations that were created in the program to conventional vehicles once the innovations became commercially viable. (Fosgard, 1995) The government created this partnership for two main reasons: The first is that they wanted to lower Americas need on foreign oil (an economic factor) through the fact that more efficient vehicles would use less oil and this would increase Americas national security (a social factor) (PNGV, 2009) because the country would be less reliant on other nations for fuel. Secondly, the U.S government wanted to lower the amount of harmful greenhouse emissions that the United States emitted as a whole and lowering the level of emissions that the cars in the U.S was one way to fulfil this reason (PNGV, 2009). This was an environmental factor causing the creation of PNGV. There was a requirement of the vehicles that were to be created in 2004, which was that they should be able to travel a certain distance on a full tank of fuel. Also there were short deadlines within the program an example was that by 1997 production prototypes of the vehicles that were most likely to meet the objectives were to be created. These two factors meant that architectural innovations over the regular internal combustion engine like a fuel cell or pure electric vehicle couldnt be pursued because they could not meet the range requirement and required much longer to research than the deadline allowed (Sperling, 1996). These are architectural innovations as they reconfigure the power source of the vehicle and no longer use an internal combustion engine. Such innovations would have been better at meeting objectives as they required little or no oil and emitted far less greenhouse gases. The only option available to the automobile manufacturers was a hybrid electric vehicle. A product and modular innovation over internal combustion engines as they use a regular internal combustion engine in partnership with one or more electric motors (Toyota, 2009). The hybrid electric vehicle was originally created in 1899 by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche (Truett, 2006), which makes the hybrid the big three manufacturers created was an incremental innovation on Porsches hybrid vehicle as their version was an enhancement of an existing technology. In the end no vehicles were produced which could meet all the requirements (Washington Times, 2009) so it could be seen as a failure. However many incremental innovations were created because of this partnership. Examples are, all of todays hybrid vehicles use some battery technology that was created in PNGV (Business Week, 2006), and DaimlerChrysler made large strides in technology which makes vehicles lighter, up to 46% lighter than conventional vehicles which they use in their latest models (Vasilash, 2000). Overall PNGV was a political factor affecting innovation because it was initiated by the government. This caused market pull on innovation in the automotive sector as the innovation was being carried out to meet a specific need. A marketing pull is when a stimulus of innovation comes from the needs of the society or from a particular sector of the market (Open University, ND).This political factor was caused by environmental, social and economical elements. Even though the government wanted to free themselves from the need on foreign oil the conflicting objectives of the partnership did not allow pursuit of architectural innovations which would have allowed this but many useful incremental innovations did come out of the partnership. 4. FREEDOM CAR PROGRAM Due to the failure of PNGV the U.S government created the FreedomCAR program (FreedomCAR, 2002). This program is a partnership between the U.S government, USCAR and five major energy companies (Green Car Congress, 2008). The program is based on the following principles: Freedom from dependence on imported oil. Freedom from pollutant emissions Freedom for Americans to choose the kind of vehicle they want to drive, to drive where they want and when they want. Freedom to obtain fuel affordably and conveniently. (U.S Department of Energy, 2009) The program is based on similar economic, social and environmental issues as PNGV however the latter 2 principles are further social factors that caused the creation of FreedomCAR. The long term focus of the program is to see whether hydrogen fuel cell vehicles can become the norm in the U.S by 2015 (Green Car Congress, 2005), this is because as previously explained the vehicles are an architectural innovation that do not require oil and produces no harmful emissions. The short term focus is to make internal combustion vehicles and electric hybrid vehicles as efficient and environmentally friendly as possible (Green Car Congress, 2005). In terms of innovation in the automotive industry, the partnership is exploring research in a wide range of areas from creating lithium ion batteries for use in vehicles to making carbon fibre much cheaper to produce (Business Week, 2006). These are incremental innovations as they are improvement on existing technology and so it may seem that they are not pursuing the long term focus of the partnership but these incremental innovations are required to make the architectural innovation possible (Business week, 2006). Just like PNGV, FreedomCAR is a political element that is having an effect on innovation in the automotive industry as it was created by the government because of several economic, social and environmental issues. The difference between the two programs is that FreedomCAR lacks restrictive deadlines and its main focus is architectural innovation which will hopefully meet the principles set. 5. CAR EMMISSIONS Car emissions have become an increasingly important issue for car owners and reducing individuals carbon footprints. Buying smaller cars have been encouraged to car owners by the media and many politicians. (Quirk, 2008) The European Union is trying to reduce the CO2 emissions from cars and also improve their fuel efficiency which led to the creation of the ACEA agreement. The agreement is between the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), and the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association (KAMA). The table below shows how these targets can change into fuel efficiency standards for petrol and diesel cars according to the ACEA agreement. For example BMW has built the Mini Cooper Diesel which meets the targets set above as they are below the criteria, making it an efficient car of its time. 64mpg is the cars combined fuel consumption and 104g/km of carbon dioxide is emitted. The 5-series saloon is also achieving these quality emissions where the 2.0 litre diesel version emits just 136g/km about the same as a hatchback. (Quirk, 2008) The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Trades chief executive said that average emissions have fallen every year during the last decade. Through technological innovation and consumer education, manufacturers have made genuine progress towards meeting tough environmental targets, (Young, 2009) Several manufacturers including Saab think the solution to reducing vehicle emissions is through the use of Flex-fuel cars or bio powered cars. These types of vehicles can run on emissions free E85 ethanol or petrol or a combination of the two (Quirk, 2008) Flexible fuel vehicles have been in production since the 1980s and have been made available to many customers who might not even know they have this type of engine in their car. (U.S Department of Energy, 2009). Flexible fuel vehicles do not experience any loss of performance when using E85 ethanol. However, since a gallon of ethanol contains less energy than a gallon of gasoline, flexible fuel vehicles typically get about 20-30% fewer miles per gallon when fuelled with E85. U.S Department of Energy (2009). Flexible fuel vehicles are an incremental innovation on regular internal combustion engine vehicles as most of the technology is the same. The only difference is that they can run on a different type of fuel. Flexible fuel vehicles produce no harmful emissions so they will help meet emissions targets but first consumers need to switch to using e85 ethanol and this will only happen if the price of e85 is not high as it has lower fuel efficiency than petrol. E85 ethanol is still some way off from being readily made available to the public because there is a lack in the number of refineries to create the fuel and pumping stations to provide it. (Quirk, 2008). Flexible fuel cars are in the fluid phase of the Abernathy and Utterback model (see Appendix 3 for full definition) as a core component (the e85 ethanol fuel) is not widely available. This lack of availability of the fuel is also slowing the innovation of flexible fuel vehicles as the fuel is not there to run flexible fuel vehicles so the vehicle manufacturers are not going to put their full effort into improving the technology. 6. CONVENIENCE AND SAFETY CAR INNOVATIONS There have been many road accidents and the main contributors to these are alcohol and careless driving. To discourage drink-driving there have been many campaigns to reduce the number of casualties from road accidents. (National Statistics, 2009). In recent years there has been an increase in accidents involving alcohol compared to a sharp fall in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. In 1986, 560 people were killed compared to 1000 people in 2000. (See Appendix 2 for full statistics) (National Statistics, 2009). Also according to Volvo, driver sleepiness is responsible for more road deaths than alcohol. In Germany, it is thought to account for a quarter of all fatal accidents and in the US about 1,500 deaths a year. (Automotive Engineer, 2006).This has therefore meant that car manufacturers have created innovations to help prevent these from happening again such as: Volvo has created the collision warning system to help prevent accidents from occurring. This system uses a wide angle sensor to scan around the car for any objects that may be near much like radar technology. A signal alerts the driver to react, if for example the car is approaching a pedestrian which will give the driver enough time to divert the vehicle away from the pedestrian (Quirk, 2008). To help lower alcohol related accidents Saab has created the Alco-Key. Saab has begun fitting this device as standard in their cars; it is a fully integrated system that requests the driver to blow into a wireless hand-held unit before driving the car. Their breath is then analysed and if the blood-alcohol limit is exceeded, a red LED will appear and the engine will not start (Quirk, 2008). Volvo has introduced the Sleep Detection system which includes Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Driver Alert Control (DAC). LDW uses cameras located between the windscreen and the rear view mirror and monitors the cars position between the road markings. Only after a certain speed is reached does the system become active, if the car then wanders across any lane markings without using an indicator, the driver is audibly alerted (Quirk, 2008). These creations are product innovations as they are new innovations that car manufacturers have created and offer with their vehicles. The fact they have been produced as a response to help prevent alcohol related accidents, which is a social factor, makes them a response to a market pull. The fact that the Alco-key is the first system that prevents drinking driving could lead to Saab gaining the first mover advantage, if such technology was to become mandatory. This advantage would be kept through the fact Saab has a patent on the technology (Free Patents Online, 2009) and a patent prevents other companies from using the technology without Saabs permission. 7. THE KYOTO PROTOCOL The Kyoto Protocol was an international agreement originally created in 1997 but in 2005 it was made legally binding, and is linked to the United Nations Framework of Climate Control. The agreement set targets for industrialised countries to cut their emission of harmful greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane, plus several others) which are partially the cause of the increase of global warming. The countries that signed the Kyoto Protocol agreed to set their own targets e.g. Japan agreed to meet a 5% cut in emissions by 2008-2012 and most EU countries agreed to an 8% cut (BBC, 2005). Carbon dioxide is created by internal combustion engine vehicles and given off from their exhaust; therefore its a cause of global warming. To meet the targets agreed, governments and automobile manufacturers need to work together. In 2007, the Japanese government agreed to spend 200 billion yen on the improvement of hybrid vehicles to lower their emissions (Reuters, 2007) as HEVs emit less harmful gases than a petrol engine (What Green Car, 2009). Also in Japan, Toyota has achieved its target of reducing carbon dioxide emissions, from 2.12 million to 1.78 million tons. It did this through decreasing their energy usage by 40% and replacing multiple production lines with single lines capable of producing different vehicles (I. Rowley, 2005). The change in their use of production lines which increased efficiency is a process innovation as it is a change in the way the vehicles were created. Both of the above examples are market pulls on innovation for the fact the change is a response to a market/government requirement. The Kyoto Protocol is a political factor based on an environmental factor (global warming), having an effect on innovation as the governments in many countries are trying to adhere to it and to adhere to it requires the government to intervene change the vehicles that the automobile industry produces and the way they are produced. 8. CONCLUSION It is clear that out of the PESTLE factors, the main one which is having the greatest effect on innovation in the automobile industry is political. Many governments are concerned about global warming and it is the automotive industry which is adding to worsening of the effects of global warming through the emissions of their vehicles and their manufacturing plants. This has led to governments to intervene in the automotive industry to make vehicle manufacturers improve their own vehicles and facilities, through innovations which have mostly been incremental. However FreedomCAR looks promising for the environment as it is hoping to create an architectural innovation, the hydrogen fuel cell vehicles that have little impact on the environment, and help meet the governments reason for creating these market pulls on innovation. It also lacks the restrictive deadlines and conflicting objectives that PNGV had which will help increase the programs chance of success. So it may be political fa ctors that are having a direct affect on innovation but these political influences are mainly based environmental factors. Social aspects are also having an affect on innovation through the improvement of safety of the vehicles that are produced. The increase in the number of accidents and alcohol related accidents has led to a market pull on innovation for vehicle manufacturers, as they have created these improvements in safety due to this increase. As it is the political factors that are directly influencing the innovations that manufacturers create, means they are not doing it in response to the environmental factors themselves. This means the automotive industry are not wanting to help lower their affect on the environment even though it is them adding to global warming. 9. RECOMMENDATIONS This report shows that the vehicle manufacturers have only begun being environmentally concerned because of political factors their having on the industry. We would recommend that the manufacturers start thinking in a more environmentally friendly manner e.g. by investing in new machinery and production facilities similar to those of Toyota which emit lower carbon emissions. Another recommendation is the manufacturers start to create more flexible fuel vehicles and promote their availability which will increase the likeliness that consumers will switch to them. But also for consumers to switch will require that more refineries which can produce the e85 ethanol needed for the vehicles to be created. Grief is a state of powerful emotion, when friends and relatives are plagued with guilt and regret over unspoken words and wasted moments. This is the emotive basis for the powerful poem 'You'll take a bath' by Scot's poet Iain Crichton Smith. Throughout the poem Crichton Smith successfully creates a haunting portrayal of his guilt-laden grief over his mother's final years and the role he played in her neglect. This neglect is evident in the vivid image of his mother's home combined with her frailty. Crichton Smith adds to this his own role in failing to rescue her and subsequently emphasises the extent to which he is plagued by regret.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The poem is divided into three stanzas, the first dealing with Smith's memories of the past when his mother was alive; whilst the remaining two explore the present. The first stanza, dealing with the past, is twice as long as the remaining two. At this point, Crichton Smith effectively employs alliteration on the words 'stony' and 'stair.' Using harsh sounds to emphasise the harsh nature of the place. Furthermore we are told that this cold harsh location had been vandalised. The phrase   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  'graffiti were black letters in a book.' The word choice of 'were' used out of context emphasises the volume of vandalism .This is supported by the effective imagery of 'letters in a book' suggesting that the graffiti covered the wall from top to bottom as in 'a book.'. Crichton Smith adds to the sense of menace by describing the writing a 'misspelt and menacing'. At this point, the poet employs words which have connotations of threatening ignorance. Such techniques are successfully combined to convey an image of a place that is both harsh and threatening.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The concept of the malign nature of the tenement is developed throughout the first stanza with Crichton Smith exploring his own role in his mother's confinement. The significance of cleanliness and hygiene cannot be overlooked by any society. Every faith and civilisation stresses the importance of cleanliness. Historically, cleanliness has been considered one of the important factors by which to judge a civilisation’s or society’s development. Islam places great emphasis on cleanliness and purity, both physically and spiritually. In Islam, spiritual purity is linked to physical cleanliness and purity. More impor tantly, cleanliness is termed an indispensable fundamental of faith. However, this fundamental and powerful tenet of our faith, unfortunately, is not reflected in our society practically. Serious reflection is required on our individual as well as collective practices in order to make this valuable principle of Islam part of our lives. There are many verses in the Holy Quran which reflect the importance of cleanliness. For example, Allah says â€Å"†¦Truly, Allah loves those who turn to Him constantly and He loves those who keep themselves pure and clean† (2:222). In the Quran worship and seeking Allah’s love is conditioned with cleanliness and purity as the Holy Book says â€Å"†¦In it [mosque] are men who love to clean and to purify themselves. Much is said rhetorically about cleanliness in our society but practically its application is missing. A quick observation can reveal how insensitive a culture we have developed regarding cleanliness and hygiene. Throwing garbage in the streets, roads or parks has become a common practice in our society. In public places dustbins are seldom found. Even if dustbins are installed, people do not use them properly. Rather, they prefer to throw garbage outside them. It is also observed that people clean their homes and shops and throw the garbage on the street without considering its implications. It is evident that even students of elite schools throw garbage on the ground even in the presence of garbage bins. This shows our attitude towards cleanliness and hygiene. Another habit that is commonly found in our society is spitting openly. People spit paan from running vehicles without considering the pedestrians walking on the road. This practice not only affects the environment but is also an eyesore. Another area that needs consideration is the horrible condition of public toilets. The shortage of public toilets is a big challenge, hence people are compelled to use open spaces to answer the call of nature. The toilets that do exist are in such pathetic condition that one cannot use them. There are many other examples which can be cited to indicate the pathetic condition of cleanliness and hygiene in our society. Hence, conscious efforts are needed to tackle this issue. There is a dire need to educate and sensitise people about the importance of cleanliness in light of our faith. In this regard social institutions such as educational institutions, the media and religious institutions can play a vital role. It is essential to provide civic education in order to train the younger generations of a society. In Pakistan, the education system needs to transform its practices. Teaching and learning material regarding cleanliness and hygiene should be included in the curriculum and textbooks. Educational institutions should demonstrate cleanliness in their premises. To train young people schools should involve students in cleaning their schools, homes and environment and highlight proper sanitary practices. The use of dustbins should be strictly followed in the school premises. Secondly, the media can be a powerful source to educate and sensitise the masses about the importance of cleanliness and disadvantages of an unhygienic way of life. It should focus on both the good as well as unhygienic practices in our society. Thirdly, religious institutions such as mosques and madressahs can also play their part in educating the people about the importance of cleanliness in the light of Islamic teachings. Furthermore, the role and commitment of the government cannot be overlooked in maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in society. The government’s will is very crucial in making policies and implementing them at the grass-roots level. The government can play an important role in cleaning areas, installing dustbins, collecting garbage and enforcing laws against littering etc. The importance of cleanliness cannot be ignored in individual as well as communal life. On one hand it is an important factor for human health and spiritual development; on the other hand it is essential for environmental development. By adopting a clean and hygienic lifestyle, a valuable amount can also be saved where health issues are concerned. A clean and healthy life helps in refining the culture of a society and reflects in every aspect of life such as art, architecture, food, music and so on. Ultimately, it leads towards a higher level of civilisation. Islam has put unique emphasis on the importance of cleanliness by making it a part of faith. Hence, there is a dire need to make conscious efforts in educating the people about the importance of cleanliness. Lurie, after â€Å"a career stretching back a quarter of a centurypublished three books† (Coetzee, 1999, p. 4) he knew were uninspired and recognized he had â€Å"never been much of a teacher† (p. 4).   However, until Apartheid ended in 1994, the persona of a â€Å"scholar† was perfect for one who actually had only an interest in â€Å"pretty girls† (p. 218).   As an attractive man in an esteemed profession, â€Å"for decades the backbone of his life† was a result of a â€Å"magnetism [where looking] at a woman in a certain way, with a certain intent, she would return his look† (p. 7). The Women in Lurie’s Life The little we know of Lurie’s first wife was revealed only in response to a question about her, a brief response that she was Dutch and returned to Holland after her divorce.   We don’t know how he felt when he married her, but what seemed a genuine indifference and lack of interest suggested she was not an important influence on the development of his character. We know that he and his second wife, Rosalind, experienced passion: â€Å"His best memories [were of] Rosalind’s long, pale body thrashing this way and that in the throes of a pleasure that was hard to tell from pain† (p. 187).   He believed that â€Å"what held them together [was only that they were] two sensualists† (p. 187). However, regardless of her sensuality and of how old she might have been, she clearly would not have been described as a â€Å"pretty girl† but as a confident and independent woman who both had a mind and did not hesitate to express her thoughts.   Her influence on David’s character might have been in his developing the ability to have non-sexual relationships with adult women, as evidenced by his post-divorce relationship with her. Regarding Lurie’s own belief about the influence of women on his character, he concluded that he was â€Å"enriched† by each of the hundreds of women in a life consisting of sex with â€Å"women he has known on two continents, some from far away in time that he barely recognizes them† (p. 192).   Readers cannot know how each or any of the women â€Å"enriched† his life, but his choices were varied.   Before Apartheid, â€Å"pretty girls† who were his students were easily seduced because â€Å"scholars† still were held in awe. When black African students gained access to college educations, their experiences had not led them to idolize any white males, an attitude that spread to other students. When the demand for courses that could be applied in jobs after college was met, Lurie’s institution, Cape Town University College, became â€Å"Cape Technical University,† and instead of being â€Å"a professor of modern languages,† he became â€Å"a professor of communications† (p. 7).   With less access to young students, his â€Å"women† ranged from prostitutes to the unattractive, middle-aged country woman Bev, he described as â€Å"almost waistless, like a squat little tub† (p. 149). If one uses imagery in reading this novel, such scenes take on a comic tone.   Another example of visualization resulting in a scene turning comic occurred while Lurie actually was demonstrating a passion in creating a work of art as he wrote an opera about Teresa, the beautiful young countess who had been in love with Lord Byron. In the opera, he depicted Teresa years after Byron’s death when she had become unattractive, looking â€Å"more like a peasant . . . than an aristocrat† (p. 181), relentlessly singing â€Å"mio Byron† (p. 183), resulting in comic imagery.   The comic element was enhanced because While Lurie did know that Byron did not feel about Teresa as she thought he did, Coetzee did not write what he must have known Byron wrote to a friend about his embarrassment when Teresa called â€Å"out to me ‘mio Byron’ in an audible key† (1819/2009).   Sadly, Lurie himself came to realize that the opera was â€Å"going nowhere. There is no action, no development [and he] has not the musical resources, the resources of energy to raise [the opera] off the monotonous track on which it has been running since the start† (p. 214). Despite the comic imagery elicited when Lurie had sex with Bev, his relationship with her did influence his character.   In working with Bev (at first to satisfy his daughter) at the clinic where there was no choice but to kill pathetic, unwanted animals, he became able to form unselfish relationships with the animals. Earlier in his life, one event clearly did influence the development of Lurie’s character, the event of becoming a father.   The first interactions in the novel between Lurie and his daughter, Lucy, made one conclude that the one unselfish relationship he had as a young man was the father/daughter one that began with Lucy’s birth.   (It was not possible to find a reason for Coetzee’s obviously non-coincidental decision to have Lurie choose the name used in a series of rustic, romantic poems by the poet of Lurie’s academic specialty, Wordsworth, 1798-1801/2009.) Her brutal rape by black men (representing not racism, but Coetzee’s depiction of the after-effects of ending Apartheid) most certainly shook him out of his lassitude, but did not influence his character in the sense that his obviously unselfish concern for her well-being and his efforts to protect her after the rape were not unexpected. In general, however, Lurie’s character did not seem to change very much since the time he was a young man.   Toward the end of the novel, after he was not permitted to watch Melanie in a performance, his behavior demonstrated the character he had from the beginning.   After having sex with a young prostitute, he feels â€Å"contented†:   â€Å"So this is all it takes, he thinks.   How could I ever have forgotten it?† (p. 194).   Perhaps the most interesting question about the novel was how Coetzee was able to make an essentially superficial man into a complex, absorbing, and sympathetic anti-hero. Impact and Application of Nanotechnology Isayah Wedderburn The wonders of nanotechnology       Abstract This project is going to inform you on the wonders of nanotechnology and how it can improves our lives in the future. Also, the different ways in which nanotechnology is assessed as an entirety in regards to it being a benefit for the future or harmful. We will explore the purpose of the researching into nanotechnology. Identifying and evaluating the purpose of the research In the next week read a book on nanotechnology to gain a foundation on how nanotechnology works and what it is. Within the first two weeks of the project read 2 journals on the medical application of nanotechnology and the theory of nanotechnology to understand nanotechnology is and how to it could impact on our future to generate a great insight on nanotechnology. In the next 5 days using the information gained throughout online research and reading a book construct a plan of different analytical techniques that can be used to evaluate nanotechnology ( i.e. methodology, evaluation and summary) and come to a conclusion. Overview A nanometre is a billionth of a metre. (Report in co-operation with the OECD International Futures Programme 2016,p 6) Nanoscience is the study of phenomena and manipulation of materials at atomic, molecular and macromolecular scales in order to understand and exploit properties that differ significantly from those on a larger scale. Nanotechnology involves an array of scientific disciplines such as chemistry, physics, biology and electronics and engineering. It has been around since the ninth century. However, modern technology enables us gain an insight and thus be able to exploit the working of nanotechnology. Additionally, it has many advantages that may able to develop civilization and improves our lives or may be a drawback to society and cause more harm than good. Nanotechnology would be paramount to future of humanity due to the fact that it has many desirable applications, not only that, it is used in a vast amount of different fields. Therefore, itll help the world develop and make improves the well-being on a global scale. The up and coming field has many potential contributions to medicine. (Report in co-operation with the OECD International Futures Programme 2016,p16)[DS2] have said Nano devices could be used for encapsulation: there are Nano capsules that are used for cancer patients. The capsule (quantum dot) travels to the site of the tumour without damaging healthy cells then diffuses and releases the toxins at an appropriate rate, killing the target tumour. A similar method could be used to detect diseases in patients at the most primitive stage to prevent any detrimental progression. Nonetheless, in the clinical field extensive trials have to be taken for the drug to be deemed suitable. This means that all the medical applications of nanotechnology will take the longest to come to fruition. Drug delivery is would be the most profitable application of this technology. Thus billions or trillions of dollars should be invested into this. The most popular use and potential part of nanotechnology is the Nanotube. It is made of carbon and a carbon nanotube is a cylinder of carbon atoms covalently bonded together. The nanotube popularity stems from its properties and structure. (Richard Booker, Earl Boysen 2005,P 68) A sheet of graphite is very strong because of the interlocking carbon-to-carbon bonds. The graphite sheets can slide across each other easily, which makes graphite useful as a lubricant. The tensile strength of the nanotube is close to 100 times greater than that of steel of the same diameter. According to Report in co-operation with the OECD International Futures Programme (Report in co-operation with the OECD International Futures Programme 2016,P10) Therefore, carbon nanotubes could be used for car to absorb a significant amount of damage due to its high tensile strength or gurder that bend instead of rapturing in an earthquake. (Report in co-operation with the OECD International Futures Programme 2016,P 9) However, there are problems with the nanotube, one of which is it is difficult to interact with different materials. For instance for functionalisation (changing the properties of nanotube by chemically binding it with other chemicals) to occur the nanotubes need to be reacted with a polymer. But this reduces the effect of its properties. Nonetheless, Scientists are trying to discover a way to overcome this process without inhibiting the properties of the nanotube. Social applications of Nontechnology (Richard Booker and Earl Boysen, 2005[DS3])Nanotechnology is still in its infant stages. Nonetheless, itll blossom slowly and become intertwined into most fields; nanotechnology will become an integral part of our lives like mobile phones. (Richard Booker and Earl Boysen, 2005[DS4]) Albeit, nanotechnology has a lot of potential to pave the way for the next revolution to become something great. However with new technology there are always social, economic and ethical issues that we have to consider, to allow commercialization for the new product. As nanotechnology is still progressing humanity is unaware of the detriment to the environment or the damage to the people of the future generation that may transpire. Unfortunately, there have been recent studies to that show toxicity exist through the result of using nanomaterials. Additionally, government and corporations are observing the effect on nanotechnology with gm crops to human health due to the fact that itll affect the chain, ultimately it may bring forth damage to humanity. Furthermore, there have been experimental results that cause major concern: single-walled nanotube can cause lesions in the lungs of rats. 15 percent died from suffocation! A plethora of people have trepidation for the division that will become more apparent between rich and poor countries nanotechnology will cause; exclusively developed countries will be benefiting from the reward of research due to having sufficient money to mass produce and distribute the products stemming from nanotechnology. (Richard Booker and Earl Boysen, 2005) Countries with less-educated works would be unable to compete in the nano technology-related future due to a lack of knowledge. Benefits in medicine will be focused on financial issues and wont be shared equally. Therefore, poor countries wouldnt be able to improve their medicine to improve peoples lives and/or wellbeing. Some governments had the privilege to invest money into nanotechnology with genetically engineered foods in the super market shelves. Which causes controversial quarrel and an uproar due to the dangers if nano foods and pesticides that may impede on the health of others. (Richard Booker and Earl Boysen, 2005) Poorer countries. To conclude there are many negative aspect of nanotechnology to consider. Humanity should ask the question; does the positive of nanotechnology outweigh the negatives? Evaluation There many benefits of nanotechnology. The advantages are that it can be used in many different disciplines and scientific fields. Because scientist are learning more about nanotechnology everyday there are more discoveries that could be made to benefit a lot of people. The options are limitless. On the other hand nanotechnology has concerning disadvantages. The disadvantages are scientists dont know the damage that could be caused to the environment and peoples health. Poor countries may face the most difficulty[DS5]. Overall, the benefits of nanotechnology outweigh the disadvantages because scientists could find various ways to overcome to the difficulties as they could make more instruments to understand how atoms and materials work. Nanotechnology will cause a great paradigm shift because itll be involved in many fields[DS6]. There have been trillion of dollars invested into to nanotechnology and an astronomical time put into it. Therefore, it would be wise to put our time to good use and allow nanotechnology to come to fruition. Summary[DS7] More time should be time and money should be invested into nanotechnology so we can develop it further. It has great potential and it should not go to waste. Ethicality of research[DS8] The researcher should always bring integrity, fairness and honesty to ensure anyone involved in an experiment is safe and it give you a piece of mind as you are being honest. Integrity in tells no coercing or deceiving the people involved. This means the participant should be willing to volunteer information; they have the right to withdraw from the research at any stage. Honesty involves considering the impact on people lives and environment to judge if the research or experiment will be pragmatic and will be more beneficial than a hindrance. In addition, is the experiment morally right? Because there could me more benefits than harm but the lives of test subjects may be put at risk or harmed. That is the most significant aspect to take into account. The scientist carry out primary research must always be explicit in what they tell the participants of what will occur so they dont have a failed understanding. For example they should be aware of the possible outcomes of the research, the associated demands and discomfort people may experience. If the experiment may cause danger to a persons life the experts conducting the research must have strong justifications of why it is necessary. It is vital that there is academic integrity. Thus you must have permission to use intellectual property such as journals. And you shouldnt assume you have automatic permission. Being ethical is crucial because it protects the scientist from losing their job, losing money or in some cases being arrested; it protects anyone involved in research to be protected as well. Methodology[DS9] The method used to collect data was by reading books to gain an insight as to what nanotechnology is. Looking at different journals online and thinking which one is the most relevant to the subject. At each stage the way information was collected is by writing down ideas and knowledge obtained from secondary research to think of a logical order to structure the findings. This allows the project to be coherent. The role of the researcher is to find important a sufficient amount of information to implement into the project. There isnt much way the personal behaviour of the researcher can be effect because the research is secondary. The best research method for gaining textual data was by reading it thoroughly and observing as which data will be relevant. Then extracting and compiling the relevant research. For the project numerical data wasnt needed to understand nanotechnology, although it could have been used to observe and think about the subject on different angles. Subjective information whether it is in written or spoken form is generally considered to be a single persons opinion. It has a viewpoint, or possibly a bias, regardless of the information it provides. Remember to reference Budgeting[DS11] Borrowing books were free because they were borrowed from the library. This means there was no need to purchase any books. The journals were free; however the library paid approximately  £20 for the journals viewed. The journals used were free as they came from a free source on Google. There was no need to print any resources as you can access the journals online. It cost  £2 to purchase lines and plain paper from the shop to write ideas down and make a plan.
